Typical Wedding Customs Around the World

A successful marriage requires falling in love many times, always with the same person. Wow!!! Marriage is defined as a union or wedlock in dictionaries. It is not any ordinary union but a sacred one uniting two soul mates to become one. It is the big step which two lovers take to start a life together. Wedding ceremonies are very sanctified, graceful and very unique to every tradition. Whatever is the country, culture or custom, a wedding is the event which totally symbolizes it.

North American weddings are mostly elaborate events while there are small, private backyard weddings which happen from time to time. Nowadays the couples write the wedding vows themselves as they wish to express the depth of their love in their own words. Then they exchange the circular wedding rings which is a symbol of unending love with no beginning or no end followed by the traditional wedding kiss. The guests toss rice as the couple leaves as a symbol of fertility. Starting from the Victorian Times until today, brides wear white gloves to symbolize modesty and romance. In Mexican weddings a ‘lasso’ which is a white ribbon, is wrapped around the bride and groom’s necks as a symbol of them coming together. Also when the couple starts their first dance at the reception, the guests form a cute heart shaped circle around them.

Western Europe is a very vast area stretching from Ireland to Italy and this explains the variety of wedding customs followed here. A custom that was introduced and has been followed since 860 A.D. is to present a gold engagement ring to seal the marriage and also to show the financial sacrifice the groom is ready to make for his new bride. Italy is the proud pioneer of wedding rings and wedding cakes since the first century B.C. when bread was broken above the bride’s head to guarantee fertility. How many of you fight to be the Best Man at a friend’s wedding? This custom began in Germany where in ancient times the groom needed his strongest friend to kidnap his bride and support him through the wedding. The ritual of the groom carrying the bride to the threshold of their new home also began here and though there are many beliefs for this, the simplest answer we can think of is the romance of the situation.

Whatever the country or culture, wedding is a special, holy ceremony and brings great joy to both the uniting couple and their family and friends who gather to wish and pray for them.
